Located on the important Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai main line, Tatanagar is one of the busiest stations in eastern India. Around 100 trains operate daily from here, making it a key railway hub in the region.

The story of Tatanagar station is closely linked with the birth of Jamshedpur itself.

In December 1907, Sakchi was chosen as the site for the Tata steel plant. A few years later, in 1910, the nearby village of Kalimati received a railway station on the BNR’s Howrah–Bombay route. The railway line became the backbone for transporting raw materials and finished steel products.

Later, the station was renamed Tatanagar in honour of the founder of Tata Steel, Jamsetji Tata.

An important milestone in Indian Railways history is also connected to Tatanagar. The Tatanagar–Rourkela section became the second 25 kV AC electrified railway section in India, after the Burdwan–Mughalsarai section in 1957.

During the smallpox eradication drive in 1974, the station gained national attention. Due to heavy passenger movement, it was considered a major point for the spread of infection, and special health checks were introduced. For some time, train services were diverted to checkpoints to control the situation.

However, a major redevelopment project is underway.

On 26th February 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of the station. The project was announced at a cost of ₹335 crores.

The redevelopment tender has been awarded to GHV Infra Projects Limited at a cost of ₹284 crores. Bhoomi Poojan for the project was held on 12th October 2025.
