Chandil Dam, Jharkhand – Location, Boating, Picnic Spot, Tourist Attraction & How to Reach

Chandil Dam is built on the Subarnarekha River, also known as the “River of Gold”, in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state. The dam is located about 36 kilometers north of Jamshedpur and is a favorite spot for picnics and road trips.

Tourists from Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal visit Chandil Dam in large numbers, especially during weekends and holidays. It is considered one of the best picnic spots in Jharkhand. Visitors enjoy boating in the dam and spend time in the peaceful natural surroundings.

Chandil Dam is a part of the Subarnarekha Multipurpose Project. It is constructed on the Subarnarekha River near a small town called Chandil in Jharkhand. The height of the dam is around 220 meters, and the water level height is about 190 meters. The total storage capacity of the dam is approximately 1963 hm³.

Chandil Dam is a wonderful place to spend quality time with family and friends. The best time to visit is during the winter season, from November to February. During this period, the weather remains pleasant, and tourists can enjoy boating and sightseeing comfortably.

Near Chandil Dam, there is a museum known as Patkum Museum. It is believed that this museum preserves ancient idols of gods and goddesses that are around 2000 years old. These idols were discovered during excavations in the nearby hilly areas and are an important part of the local heritage.

The nearest major city is Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.

  • Via NH 18: Approx. 35.5 km – 50 minutes
  • Via Tata–Kandra Road: Approx. 44.6 km – 1 hour 14 minutes

From Ranchi, Chandil Dam is around 106 kilometers away via NH43.

From Chakradharpur, the distance is approximately 83.3 kilometers via NH20 and NH30.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Chandil Junction. The distance from the railway station to Chandil Dam is about 6.4 kilometers.

A parking facility is available near the dam. The parking charge for a four-wheeler is ₹30 per vehicle.

Authorities allow visitors to cook food at the picnic spot. However, it is recommended that you carry your own essentials such as drinking water and food items for convenience and safety.
